The future of 3D printing is already arriving - Printing in China | Book Printing

http://www.printing-in-china.cn/shownews.asp?id=2202
3D printing will create new ways of distributing products
Industries will no longer be able to conduct business as usual. They can spend a lot of time and money fighting that change and trying to regulate it out of existence, or they spend the same amount of time and money figuring out how to embrace and make use of that change. I hope that when faced with this opportunity these industries learn something from the hard lessons that the music and movie industries have learned and really try to embrace this change.
All products will become customisable
Big brands will integrate 3D printing into their offering, because it enables them to create a very unique experience for the customer. Take the iPad, for example. The electronics will be manufactured the regular way – but some parts of the object will be 3D printed – for example, the cover, the casing – and can be offered with a lot of diversity.
3D printers will teach kids to make their own toys
It's about introducing kids to design, and about empowering them to express their creativity. I believe that every kid is creative, they just need to have a tool which allows them to express themselves, and that's exactly what I'm aiming to do with 3D printing.

This normally is subject to the product to be packaged. Weight, shape, price level, buyer’s age, and so on is the factors that the designer will have to consider.
If the product is small and cute, 250gsm~350gsm single side coated paper is fine. The coated side will be printed. Color makes the packaged product looks very nice and interesting.
If the product is large and heavy, then grey board will be required and then laminated with art paper. This makes the box stronger!
What kind product needs the paper box packaging? There are so many!

The key insights and tips to help you create your next children's picture book

http://www.goldprinting.cc/products/children's-books-printing.html
The key insights and tips to help you create your next children's picture book - Ed.
Writing
Childrens Books
A picture book has 32 pages. This is to do with the size of paper and of printing presses. (It is possible to have a smaller book for very young children, but it will always be in multiples of four pages: eg. 16, 24.)
The title page would most often be page 3, and the text and/or illustrations would start on page 4 or 5.
The text and final illustration would be on page 30, 31 or less usually, 32.
An average text for a picture book would be 600 – 800 words. It is quite difficult to write an interesting story with some intellectual or emotional depth in so few words.
Don't be misled by the apparent simplicity of good picture book stories. A simplistic story is usually not one that children will want to hear again and again. A good picture book story will appear to be simple, but there will be hidden depths, ripples and reverberations. It will be rich in ideas and feelings. There will be much that the adult reader can talk about with the child.
Each block of text for an individual page or a double spread should contain some interesting visual idea.
In a good picture book, the child should be surprised and delighted by the variation in the images on successive pages. If the illustrations are too similar from one page to the next, it is perhaps a children's story (that might or might not have illustrations) rather than a picture book.
If you hope to sell your book outside your circle of family and friends, the theme must be universal however localised the characters and settings. The theme of loneliness, for example, can work just as well if the characters are kangaroos, sloths or badgers.
Be clear about whether animals in your stories are actually animals or are people in animal guise. A real horse on its own in a field, for example, may run up and down the fence line when it sees horses galloping in a neighbouring field. But a horse that tells a passing rabbit that it is lonely is actually a human represented as a horse.
Don't be misled into thinking that, because your grandchildren like the story you have written, other children unknown to you will like it, too.
You often don't need to say in words that which is shown in illustrations.
The illustrations should do more than just illustrate the story. Usually, good illustrations will add to the story.
A story needs to have a good ending. It is advisable to know the ending before you begin to write your story.
Be clear about the age of the child who is at the centre of your target audience.
Don't write in rhyme unless you are more than competent in the form. Don't ever let the need to rhyme dictate what you say. Don't let the demands of rhyme or rhythm force you to distort language or grammar or sentence structure.
Make sure that your writing is clear and elegant and a joy to read.
    Never underestimate your audience.

Drupa set to move to three year cycle in 2015 - Printing in China | Book Printing

http://www.printing-in-china.cn/shownews.asp?id=2200
Industry speculation had been rife that event organiser Messe Düsseldorf was gauging opinion on changing the frequency and duration of the show. However, director of Drupa Manuel Mataré confirmed the speculation today (11 October) following the announcement that he would be gradually winding down his involvement with the show for health reasons.
Mataré said that Drupa had been canvassing opinion from exhibitors and visitors for a number of months on whether the show should shorten its current 14-day span and also either stick to its current four-year cycle or move to three years. He will present his findings to Drupa’s 22-strong committee on the 2 November, with an announcement expected the following week.

Mataré stressed that the committee would make the final, formal decision, but revealed that his recommendation, based on feedback, was moving to a three-year cycle and 11 day duration, starting in 2015.
"There are three issues we will present, the most important being what will be the content of the next Drupa and how will it anticipate and reflect the changes in the industry. The second issue is the length of Drupa, we have come to the conclusion that we have to ‘give in’ and respect the wishes of the industry and shorten Drupa, not to 13 days and no less than 10 days, most likely a compromise of 11 days with a middle weekend," he said.
"The third issue is when. There are good reasons for three years, as we had in the 1970s, and there are good reasons for four years. The best reason for four years is that people don’t like change."
However, Mataré highlighted that not only were exhibitors and visitors generally keen for shift in cycle but that Messe Düsseldorf has two shows on a similar scale to Drupa, Interpack and plastics show K, both of which are on a three-year cycle. There is also substantial crossover of exhibitors between K and Interpack and Interpack and Drupa and if Drupa was to move to 2015, the three shows would be synched with one ‘big’ event every year. The next opportunity to synch the shows will not be until 2027.
Mataré, who turns 60 next year, revealed the proposed changes to Drupa following the news that he will begin handing over the reins of the show to Sabine Geldermann on 1 January 2013. After a six month handover he will then act as consultant for Messe Düsseldorf until 2016.
Geldermann is an experienced trade show organiser who has previously run a number of exhibitions for Reed Exhibitions Germany, including visual communications show Viscom and Pro Sign. Most recently she was part of the divisional management of German engineering Association VDI, which boasts 150,000 members.
Mataré, who joined Drupa in 1994, said his departure had been planned for a while as a result of legacy health issues associated with a bout of pneumonia contracted in 2010.
"I’ve known for a long time that Drupa 2012 would be my last show [in charge]... as hard as this step is for me, I have to slow down," said Mataré.
"Drupa is different from all of other shows, it’s a special show, an emotional show – there’s something different about it. But I’ll still be around, just not every day and not every hour, until 2016."
For industry reaction to Drupa's likely move to 2015 and its potential impact on rival shows, see next printing news.

Printing error mars Palm Beach County absentee ballots | Book Printing - Gold Printing Group

http://www.goldprinting.cc/shownews.asp?id=2192
That means election workers will have to sort through the ballots that voters mail back and duplicate the affected ballots so that they can be run through the tabulation machines that tally the votes.
This latest hiccup adds to a history of Palm Beach County vote-counting problems that gained international attention during the confusion and delayed recounts of the disputed 2000 presidential election.
"This is serious stuff," Palm Beach County Republican Party Chairman Sid Dinerstein said about the absentee ballot error. "This raises all the horror stories."
Bucher blamed the error on a vendor she uses to print absentee ballots.
Absentee voters can still request new ballots. Also, public observers will be on hand to oversee elections workers that duplicate and tabulate the ballots that are received, Bucher said.
"We are doing our very best to try and inform the public … be as transparent as possible," Bucher said. "We move forward."
Bucher uses Arizona-based Runbeck Election Services, which has a facility in Sunrise, to print absentee ballots.
Bucher said her office approved proofs of the absentee ballots that were correct. She said the company then had a computer problem that for about half of the 60,000 ballots resulted in leaving some information off portions of the ballots involving judicial races.
Bucher's office mailed the ballots before noticing the error.
While all the candidates are listed on the affected ballots, titles intended to separate the categories of judicial candidates in some cases are missing, Bucher said. That left out the titles above the races for retention of Florida Supreme Court justices and for the 4th District Court of Appeal.
That changes the location of some races on the ballot and that misalignment means those ballots can't be read by tabulation machines, Bucher said.
Runbeck President Kevin Bannon, in an Oct. 8 letter to Bucher, acknowledged the "incorrect printing." He said the "master ballot repositories were not correctly linked to the printer for the production run."
Duplicating absentee ballots isn't a new process, though it doesn't typically involve this many ballots.
The elections office creates duplicate versions of ballots that members of the military fax to the election's office so that those votes can be registered by tabulation machines. The elections office also duplicates other absentee ballots that can't be read by tabulation machines because they have been damaged or had other problems.

Will Printing Money Do It? | Book Printing - Gold Printing Group.

http://www.goldprinting.cc/shownews.asp?id=2190
As recession deepens in the euro zone and US growth remains tepid, western central bankers have in effect announced their intention to print money as long as it takes for growth to return. The critics of this Keynesian solution are seeing red. Republicans fret that jump-starting job creation, as US Fed chairman Ben Bernanke proposes to do, could improve the re-election prospects for Barack Obama. Head of German Bundesbank considers it a devilish policy that would burn Germany along with the euro zone in the fire of inflation.
But what happens if inflation is not ignited, and nor is the engine of job-creation lit? The answer to this conundrum will determine the health of the world economy for years to come.
The Fed’s policy of Quantative Easing (QE3) is effectively a plan to print $40 billion each month to buy mortgage-backed securities for an indefinite period. The resulting lowering of mortgage rates is expected to revive the housing market and, along with it, construction industry jobs and household wealth. As Bernanke put it, “We’re looking for ongoing, sustained improvement in the labour market.”
Despite criticism, Bernanke certainly has the authority to take this extreme measure as the Fed’s mission is “to promote effectively the goals of maximum employment, stable prices and moderate long-term interest rates”.
The idea behind QE3 is that uncertainty about fiscal policy since 2008 has depressed job creation by 2 per cent. A similar desire to end uncertainty forced the European Central Bank to promise unlimited backing to shore up national bonds. The euro zone economy shrank 0.2 per cent in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter. Job losses, too, accelerated at the fastest pace since last year reaching a record rate of 11.2 per cent in June. After unsuccessful attempts at saving the euro through repeated bailouts, and pursuing an austerity policy, ECB’s Mario Draghi has promised to indefinitely buy debt from euro zone countries like Spain and Italy that are threatened with unsustainable rise in bond yield. Troubled countries have been buoyed by the promise of ECB support but they haven’t yet asked for help, worried perhaps by new conditionalities.
How long will the money taps remain open? One of the Fed’s bankers, Charles Evans, of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, recommended that the Fed pledge to keep rates near zero until unemployment is down to 7 per cent or inflation has risen to 3 per cent. It is not clear what happens if near-zero rates do not inspire bankers to risk offering long-term mortgages, or if the housing market does not take off. Neither is there certainty that the ECB can keep its promise if countries start backsliding on reform. If investors keep sitting on their pile of cash, despairing about not finding customers, there may be no inflation — but there won’t be any rise in employment either.
In their determination to jump-start the economy through stimulus spending, the central bankers may not have factored in the challenge of structural changes taking place in the labour market. Although the manufacturing industry, discouraged by rising wages in China, has begun to return to the US, job creation has been tepid. The new manufacturing relies more on automation and robots supervised by only a handful of engineers.
The fact is that unemployment is not just an American or an European problem; it is rising in China as well. For a long time China’s low-cost labour has been held responsible for disappearing western jobs. The latest data shows that manufacturing employment in China peaked in 1996.

While China’s manufacturing output in 2008 was 70 per cent greater than it was in 1996, over the same period, employment in the sector dropped by more than 25 per cent. Productivity from increasing automation rather than labour shortages could provide the explanation. Further indirect evidence comes from analysts showing that while wages are rising in China, so too is unemployment. This is because available skills do not meet the demand for high-tech manufacturing — exactly the same reason why many US manufacturing jobs remain unfilled.
Given the rather dim prospect of fiscal stimulus to financial institutions succeeding in creating jobs and increasing aggregate demand, central bankers may one day be forced to consider a remedy that some economists have long suggested for boosting consumption: simply hand over cash to individual citizens as tax rebates or vouchers for goods and services.
